Not all contractors install crown mouldings the same way. Since 2001, Elite Mouldings has installed hundreds of miles of cornice mouldings and we learned a few things in the process. We take great pride in our installation and the installers that we work closely with. Most of the time, our installations are done in one day, with minimal mess.

Most of our Installations are done in just 1 day

Up until recently, plaster mouldings was favored by discriminating homeowners as the material of choice for cornice mouldings. Wood mouldings were dimensionally unstable they expanded and contracted with humidity and temperature variation. This resulted in unsightly cracks and exposed seams. The advent of MDF changed all that, the same way that HDF changed hardwood flooring. MDF is far more stable than solid or finger-joint wood, a great innovation for baseboards and casings where the joints are hidden by furniture. However, this was still not enough of an advancement for cornice mouldings, where any seams are unacceptable. Here's why we consider ourselves to be the "elite" installers of crown moldings -

OUR INSTALLATION PROCESS!

We didn't invent it, but we do meticulously practice it without fail. Our Crown Moulding Installation comes with a 5-YEAR WARRANTY Elite Mouldings success has been predicated on solving the problem of joints or seams showing up after installation, here is how we do it:

We use brad nails that are 2" (18 gauge) in pairs at 45 degrees approximately 16" apart to ensure a strong hold whether fastening into the drywall or into the studs. These are counter-sinked so that they can be later hidden.

Next, we glue a wooden brace behind ALL our seams. See Picture... Bracing the back also lines up the front of the moulding making the seams disappear.

The Right Glue Virtually Eliminates Service Repairs Due to Shrinkage

Our installers use a specially formulated MDF Glue, on ALL our joints. We don't use either white or yellow wood working glue because both of these glues do not absorb well into MDF and remain slightly flexible, even when they are fully cured. That allows MDF wood fibers to slip, or "creep". The solution is to use glues that can penetrate MDF fibers and cure rock hard so that creep isn't a problem.

Finally, we apply the finishing touches, which include, meticulously caulking (dapping) around the seams where the crown meets the wall and spackling for the pin holes followed by a light sanding. The mouldings are now ready for it's final coat of paint. Although all the mouldings we install are factory-primed white, they look much better when painted with a FLAT or EGG SHELL latex paint, the flatter the paint, the better the results. A big advantage of MDF mouldings over plaster moulding, is the fast cleanup time, you do not need to cover walls or furniture for us. Cleaning up after installing plaster mouldings can take days. Cutting MDF does make a fine sawdust, but we ALWAYS cut our wood outside, in the garage, saving you cleanup time.
